Expansion is a series of photographic works that explore the disjunction between the history of the American West and the popular romanticized narrative of that history. The work focuses on the ways that cinema and vernacular images have constructed the myth of the West through the creation of a visual language that promotes ideologies inherent to Manifest Destiny and westward expansion. The title refers to both the historical expansion of white settlers onto land that was previously inhabited by Native Americans and an ever expanding archive of photographs of the Western landscape that sustain the illusion of unoccupied spaces. It is a work in progress.
